Termination of Pregnancy services

There are currently two abortion service providers in Swindon: Marie Stopes and the British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS).

Marie Stopes

Abortion treatment is an essential clinical service, and it is vitally important that women are as able as ever to access our services during this pandemic.

Our telemedicine service is fully operational – patients who are eligible for this service can choose to have their medication delivered via post, or can collect it from one of our clinics.  Patients who not eligible for this service (i.e. those with safeguarding or complex clinical needs) will still be able to receive face-to-face care at a clinic of their choosing. This service is available for all of our patients, free of charge.

Our clinics are open and running as normal, offering medical abortions up to 9 weeks and 6 days and surgical abortions up to 23 weeks and 6 days. We are observing social distancing within our clinics, keeping our patients and staff as safe as possible.

The first step is to call and talk to one of our team, on 0345 300 8090. Our telephone line is open 24/7 and is free to use. Patients can call this line to talk through their options, book treatment or receive specialist clinical advice from our nursing team and counsellors.

Patients do not need a referral from their GP to access our services. Patients can self-refer for treatment by calling our team directly.

We aim to provide initial consultations within 48 hours, and have capacity to provide treatment in our clinics in Westbury and Bristol. You can find a clinic near you via this link.

We are CCG funded, which means that patients can access our treatment free of charge. A full list of our clinic locations can be found here: https://www.mariestopes.org.uk/find-us/

Please see the following link for a page we have set up specifically for Pharmacy online traffic: any pharmacy can use this link on their website to send traffic to our Marie Stopes UK website. https://www.mariestopes.org.uk/pharmacy-advice/

The British Pregnancy Advisory service

We are an independent healthcare charity.  Since 1964 we have been caring for women and couples who decide to end a pregnancy. Treatment is offered up to 23 weeks and 6 days gestation.

Your treatment options will depend on how many weeks the pregnancy is, your medical suitability and your personal choice.

You can take pills for a medical abortion up to 10 weeks in your own home rather than attending a clinic. You will have a telephone consultation and full medical assessment with a trained nurse or midwife who will assess your suitability for treatment. If treatment is suitable and safe, you will receive abortion pills by post a few days later, or we can book you for an alternative treatment in clinic. Sometimes a scan or other in clinic checks are required before treatment.

Alternatively you can attend one of our clinics offering surgical abortions.  Find your local clinic here: https://www.bpas.org/contact-us/find-a-clinic/

97% of the women we see, have their treatment paid for by the NHS (or another government department). To assess your eligibility, we need your address and the name and address of your GP. Telephone us to see if your treatment can be funded by the NHS.

There are two ways to make an appointment:

1 –  Request an appointment – Book your appointment online for abortion services only.

2 – Call 03457 30 40 30 to book an appointment or make an enquiry.

A medical assessment and full consultation is necessary before abortion treatment can take place to make sure that it is legal, suitable and safe. The consultation and medical assessment is usually completed over the telephone, but sometimes takes place in clinic, and we may need to send you for a scan to date your pregnancy. Click for more information.

You do not need a referral from their GP to user our services. Clients can self-refer for treatment by calling our team directly: 03457 30 40 30
